Chapter 14

As the residents of Netherfield Park sat in the breakfast parlour on the Monday before the ball, Bingley cleared his throat. “The day after the ball, I will be for London, there is some business I must attend to which cannot be done via correspondence.”

“Albeit I intended to remain longer, I need to meet with the Earl, Countess, and my sister so I will depart after the ball as well,” Darcy revealed.

Miss Bingley was happy. Both her brother and Mr. Darcy would be away from the fortune-hunting Bennets, and she would do what she needed to in order to ensure they would not return to this backwater.

“My wife and I will join you on Saturday. We will return on the following Tuesday,” Hurst stated. They were to see an accoucheur in London. “I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that Louisa is with child.”

Darcy and the Colonel congratulated the couple on their impending blessing, but Miss Bingley remained silent. “Fitzwilliam, you wanted to meet the Bennets, did you not?” Bingley asked.

Trying not to show it, Darcy bristled. “Yes, I would very much like to meet these wondrous creatures,” the Colonel responded.

Miss Bingley scoffed. “Was there something you wanted to add, Caroline?” Bingley challenged. When his sister looked away, he continued. “Darcy, will you join Fitzwilliam and me when we deliver the invitation for the ball to the Bennets?”

As much as his heart screamed yes, Darcy allowed his head to overrule it. “No, thank you; I have letters to write,” he stated, knowing there was nothing that could not keep for later.

“Why would you give the Bennets such consequence as to deliver their invitation in person?” Miss Bingley sneered. She could not help herself. Was her brother senseless?

“Caroline, use that vast education of yours from Miss Hathaway’s and explain to me how a landed gentleman and his family, who are above me, are able to gain consequence from the son of a tradesman?” Bingley asked pointedly.

Miss Bingley’s face turned a purple hue with the rage she felt at their roots being bandied about in front of the Colonel and Mr. Darcy. “Surely you agree with me, Mr. Darcy,” Miss Bingley managed to say between gritted teeth.

“I am afraid not,” Darcy replied offhandedly. “What your brother said is correct.”

Fighting her inclination to allow her temper free rein, Miss Bingley stood and exited the breakfast parlour without a word to any of the others within. She stamped up the stairs and as much as she wanted to slam her door, she did not. Once inside, she picked up the single ornament remaining in her chambers. When she recalled the penalty for allowing herself to release her anger, as she desired to, she begrudgingly replaced it. Instead, she threw herself onto her bed and screamed into the pillows.

“It is a good thing she did not slam her door and we can here no sounds of items being broken,” Bingley stated. “Will you be ready in an hour, Fitzwilliam?”

“That I will,” the Colonel replied after he lowered his mug of coffee.
